Brighton, NY

The Erie Canal gives Brighton a long public edge rather than a single signature park. At Meridian Centre Park, athletic fields and an amphitheater share a 24-acre site with boat and fishing docks and a perimeter trail that reaches the Canalway path. Brighton Town Park connects to the same route by a paved walkway and adds a wooded nature path beside a 12-acre pond. Farther northeast, Corbett's Glen Nature Park protects 52 acres around Allen Creek, with two miles of trails, a boardwalk, a viewing deck, and a seat above Postcard Falls. These destinations are spread through an unusually narrow crescent of land that runs 13 miles from Indian Landing to the Genesee River and is nowhere more than three miles wide. Brighton's population stood at 37,137 in 2020. That shape carries Brighton's history. Seneca trails crossed the Genesee country before the town was created in 1814, and repeated Rochester annexations later reduced its territory.

Fruit, dairy, and nursery operations replaced early grain farms; in the early twentieth century, housing began to cover former farm tracts along roads leading out of Rochester. Current community activity still follows several distinct corridors. Buckland Park combines baseball and multiuse fields, three playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, a perimeter trail, and the restored Buckland farmhouse and gardens. Brighton Memorial Library's 2026 calendar includes storytimes, hands-on learning labs, films, art and technology programs, discussion groups, and summer reading for children, teens, and adults. A Sunday farmers market runs from April through November 2026 with produce, prepared foods, music, and rotating community groups. At the town's southern end, Monroe Community College's 300-acre Brighton Campus brings residence halls, athletics, theater, public events, and contemporary exhibitions at Mercer Gallery.
