Britton, MI

Britton is a Lenawee County village inside Ridgeway Township, about nine miles northeast of Adrian along M-50. The 2020 census counted 537 residents. Agriculture and small business fill the spaces between the village streets, while the Norfolk Southern rail line follows the same corridor that brought Britton into being. The place was first called Balch after the Wabash Railroad built a station and opened a post office in 1881. That railroad history still marks the village's story.

In 1888, postmaster and storekeeper John Britton paid $500 to rename the town after himself. That detail gives the village an unusually direct name story. Britton Deerfield Schools now operates two campuses: elementary, high school, preschool, and Great Start programs in Britton, with upper elementary and middle school in Deerfield. That arrangement ties the village to a wider rural school area. The railroad station, M-50, farm fields, and school district still define the everyday map. Britton is a railroad village with a personal name, a shared school system, and the kind of agricultural edge that keeps Lenawee County towns connected.
