Brookfield got its start in the late 1800s as a classic railroad suburb, and that commuter-friendly layout still shapes daily life here today. Spread across about three square miles, the village packs nearly 20,000 residents into walkable neighborhoods full of brick bungalows, Victorians, and leafy side streets. One of the biggest perks for commuters is the Metra BNSF line, which features three separate stops within town borders: Congress Park, Brookfield, and Hollywood. If you are house hunting near Salt Creek along the north and east edges, it is smart to check flood zone maps and ask about basement drainage, since those scenic riverside pockets can occasionally deal with high water after heavy spring rains.

The village is widely known across the Chicago area as the home of Brookfield Zoo. Spanning over 200 acres of Cook County forest preserve land, the zoo has been a local icon since 1934 and brings world-class wildlife exhibits right into the backyard of local families. Living this close means you can grab a family membership and pop in for an hour on a weekday afternoon or stroll through the seasonal lights in the winter. The Hollywood train station sits right near the south entrance, blending the zoo grounds smoothly into the surrounding residential blocks. Summer weekends definitely bring extra visitor traffic through the neighborhood, but having such an expansive green space right in town is a great perk for residents.

Gamers and retro enthusiasts flock to Ogden Avenue for the Galloping Ghost Arcade, the largest classic arcade in the country, alongside its dedicated pinball annex down the street. Residents also enjoy a solid lineup of local craft breweries, neighborhood pubs, the annual Brookfield Criterium bike race, and summer concerts at Kiwanis Park along Salt Creek.
