About Brookfield

Brookfield is a Linn County city of 4,111 residents in the 2020 census, surveyed in 1859 by John Wood Brooks. Four street names - John, Wood, Brooks, and Boston - still carry the surveyor's name through the grid. The city sits in north-central Missouri with a school, library, historic museum, and a downtown that becomes a staging ground for one of the region's most recognizable annual events. Brookfield R-III runs elementary, middle, high school, and career-center programs, while the Tillman House museum holds railroad, school, music, and Linn County collections. Every Labor Day weekend, the Great Pershing Balloon Derby fills the fields west of town and ties Brookfield to Pershing State Park and the area's ballooning tradition.

The 2026 event marks fifty years of continuous sanctioned competition, with flights, night glows, a parade, and Twin Parks activities. Fall brings another local ritual when Brookfield Bulldogs meet the Marceline Tigers in the Bell Game, one of the oldest high-school football rivalries in the country. Brookfield's rhythm is built around school, civic memory, and a pair of annual events that turn the town outward toward the surrounding farm country.
