Broomes Island, MD

Broomes Island is a Calvert County CDP at the southern end of MD 264, on the Patuxent River near the mouth of St. Leonard Creek. The road ends on a peninsula between Island Creek and the river, about ten miles south of Prince Frederick. That water position shaped both work and history: Broomes Island was a center of oyster canning in the early and mid-20th century, and the mouth of St. Leonard Creek was involved in the War of 1812 fighting along Calvert’s waterways.

The small local map still revolves around a few practical places. The community has its own post office, a Wesleyan church, and a former two-room schoolhouse used as a community center; seafood work still operates along the water. Residents rallied to keep the Broomes Island post office open when closure was proposed in 2007, a reminder of how much weight a small civic stop can carry at the end of the road. At the end of MD 264, naval history, oyster work, church, schoolhouse, and mail service all meet on one narrow peninsula.
