Brownsboro, TX

Brownsboro is a Henderson County city of 1,212 people at the 2020 census, stretched along Texas State Highway 31 between Tyler and Athens. The town began in 1849 when John 'Red' Brown operated a toll bridge across Kickapoo Creek on the road to Jordan's Saline and Tyler. That crossing is the key to its early shape: the settlement grew around movement, water, and the people who needed to get across. By 1860 Henry Cade had added a sawmill and cotton gin, and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway pulled the town toward its tracks in 1880.

An older settlement called Old Normandy stood near the present town. Johan Reinert Reiersen established it in 1845 and encouraged Norwegian immigration; a Norwegian Lutheran church and cemetery followed in 1853 before that community merged into Brownsboro. Today the Brownsboro Independent School District serves local families, and Highway 31 still sends daily trips east to Tyler and southwest to Athens. Brownsboro has the feel of an East Texas road town whose history can be read in three linked pieces: the creek crossing, the railroad, and the farm country between them.
