About Browntown
Browntown is a Luzerne County CDP in Pittston Township, pressed against Pittston City along U.S. 11. Its story is the Wyoming Valley coal story in miniature. An 1893 account described Browntown as a mining place on Pennsylvania Coal Company leaseholds, with roughly 1,000 residents living in about 200 mine-linked homes. The neighborhood is still part of the Pittston Area School District and the Greater Pittston orbit, but it has no separate borough government. Browntown is one of those northeastern Pennsylvania names that makes sense once you see the township line, the city edge, and the old coal workings stitched together around it.
