Buckhall, VA

Three small buildings, rather than a formal downtown, preserve Buckhall's historic center. Prince William County's community history identifies a one-room school dating to about 1865, Buckhall Church from about 1905, and the former general store near today's Prince William Parkway. The store doubled as a neighborhood gathering place; from 1977 to 1984 its owners jokingly called it the "Buckhall Mall." Fire destroyed the building in 2007, but the site remains in commercial use. Farms and small livestock operations still occupied the surrounding acreage in the 1940s, while extensive residential development followed from the 1960s onward. Buckhall covers 19.70 square miles, so the modern census-designated place extends far beyond that old crossroads.

Doves Landing supplies a large public-land counterpoint to the developed landscape. Existing routes are natural-surface and include rugged sections. In January 2025, the county and Northern Virginia Conservation Trust recorded a conservation easement protecting the land for habitat, water quality, passive recreation, and outdoor education. The county's adopted master plan envisions an accessible loop, restrooms, nature trails, and educational facilities, but those are future improvements rather than current amenities; design work was still at the 35-percent stage in 2025. That distinction matters for understanding life in Buckhall now: Doves Landing already offers forest and river access, while its more developed visitor facilities remain a plan.
