Bucksport, SC

Bucksport sits at a rare meeting point in Horry County: the Waccamaw River runs into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, and Bucksport Road leads north toward U.S. 701. The community grew from Henry Buck, a Maine lumberman who came to the Waccamaw in the 1830s and built sawmills among cypress, pine, and hardwood forests. Buck's family later tried shipbuilding; the Henrietta, launched in 1875, was the only clipper ship built in South Carolina.

The river still gives Bucksport its shape. A brick chimney beside the Waccamaw is the remnant of the nineteenth-century sawmill, while today the water carries recreation, boats, and Intracoastal traffic. Bucksport is an unincorporated community and census-designated place, so its daily services sit within Horry County's wider system. The branch of Horry County Memorial Library provides a local stop, while Myrtle Beach and Conway supply larger jobs, shopping, and regional services. The water remains the shortest way to read the community. Bucksport is a port community whose timber past remains visible beside the water.
