About Buena Vista

Buena Vista is an unincorporated census-designated place in western Amador County, California, about four miles south-southeast of Ione. The 2020 census counted 542 residents. Its name reaches back to Buena Vista Ranch, one of the county’s early precincts, and the community remains a small crossroads area near Jackson Valley Road, agricultural fields, and the Lake Amador recreation area. The land here is the low western side of Amador County, where grazing, hay, alfalfa, and open valley ground meet the foothills.

The Buena Vista Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians lies just outside the community, linking the place to a living tribal history. The federal government purchased the rancheria in 1927, and the tribe has maintained its Amador County connection across generations. County planning material describes Buena Vista as a small crossroads commercial area with nearby rural homes and a mobilehome community, while Ione supplies the closest larger town center. Buena Vista is a compact foothill-edge settlement whose map is made from ranch land, Jackson Creek, tribal history, and the roads leading toward Amador’s Gold Country towns.
