Buffalo is a Scott County city on the Mississippi River, part of the Quad Cities region. Its location gives the city an unusual river orientation: here the Mississippi runs chiefly east-west for a stretch before resuming its broader southward course. That bend puts Buffalo in the same river corridor as Davenport, Bettendorf, and the Illinois Quad Cities, so the city's geography is tied to a larger cross-river region. The wider Quad Cities stretch also includes Lock and Dam 15, a reminder that the river is both landscape and working infrastructure.

Steamship captain Benjamin W. Clark settled the area in 1833, when river transportation was the organizing fact of the settlement. The modern school arrangement shows how Buffalo fits into the wider metro: Davenport Community School District serves the city, with Buffalo Elementary, Walcott Intermediate, and Davenport West High School among the zoned schools. The Mississippi remains Buffalo's physical reference point, while the Quad Cities provide the broader regional network around it.
