Buffalo’s skyline tells the story of how it grew into one of the country's great port cities. Sitting right where Lake Erie meets the Niagara River, the city boomed as the western terminus of the Erie Canal, with massive grain elevators rising along the waterways to move cargo across the country. Today, those towering concrete relics still stand along the Buffalo River, giving the waterfront a distinct industrial character. The shoreline now welcomes kayak rentals, craft breweries, and waterfront parks alongside working freighters.

Away from the water, Buffalo's neighborhoods are shaped by one of the country's most celebrated urban green spaces. Frederick Law Olmsted designed a park system here that links leafy parkways with sprawling neighborhood parks, anchored by Delaware Park in the heart of the city. Right at the park’s western edge sits the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, a world-class modern art destination with striking glass galleries. The museum grounds connect directly to Elmwood Village, making it easy to spend an afternoon checking out contemporary art, walking the park trails, or grabbing lunch at a local cafe.

Modern Buffalo has also grown into a major hub for healthcare, research, and local business. Just north of downtown, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus brings together hospitals, research labs, and university programs right beside vibrant neighborhoods like Allentown. To the southeast, the historic Larkin District has transformed old manufacturing warehouses into modern offices and lively gathering spots. Larkin Square draws crowds throughout the warmer months for outdoor live music, food truck gatherings, and community events, offering an energetic social scene for residents.

Getting around these central hubs is simple with Buffalo's Metro Rail, which runs along Main Street from the University at Buffalo's South Campus straight through downtown to the waterfront. The train provides an easy link for daily commutes to the medical corridor and downtown offices, as well as weekend outings. Riders can hop off for a show at Shea's Performing Arts Center, catch a baseball game at Sahlen Field, or ride all the way down to Canalside for ice skating in the winter and outdoor festivals in the summer. Next door, Buffalo RiverWorks hosts concerts, sports leagues, and dining inside restored grain silos, giving newcomers plenty of ways to explore the city.
