Buffalo Soapstone, AK

Buffalo Soapstone is a Matanuska-Susitna Borough CDP north of Palmer, with the Glenn Highway and local roads doing most of the orienting. The name covers the Buffalo Mine-Soapstone area within the larger Mat-Su valley. It is part of the Anchorage metropolitan area, but the local map feels more like a scattered Alaska valley community than a city grid. Buffalo Soapstone first appeared as a census-designated place in 2000. The local read is simple: a place with a double name, a highway connection, and a distinctly Mat-Su address.
