Buhl, MN

Buhl sits high on the Laurentian Divide in the middle of Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. Its 1913 city hall was built during a period of rapid mining growth, and the Beaux-Arts building still serves as the municipal center. That pairing—an active local government inside a preserved mining-era hall—gives Buhl a clear link between the Iron Range’s industrial past and its current civic life. The city’s history also includes the pits, rail lines, immigrant families, and work camps that made a small northern community part of a much larger ore economy.

Today, Buhl’s recreation follows the same land that mining reshaped.
