Bunkie, LA

Bunkie is an Avoyelles Parish city that grew around a railroad endpoint rather than a courthouse plan. The 2020 census counted 3,346 residents. The Texas and Pacific Railroad made the settlement a station terminus, and the town took its name from the daughter of the original landowner. That origin still gives Bunkie a practical, central-Louisiana feel: the town is part of the parish's farm network, with older streets and a rail history underneath the newer road traffic.

The event locals put on the calendar is the Louisiana Corn Festival, held on the second full weekend in June. It began in 1986 as a celebration of the crop and the agricultural work around it, then grew into a full town weekend with a street dance, corn contests, a children's parade, and pirogue races. Those pirogues are a nice reminder that Bunkie's story is not only about fields and rail cars; the waterways and swamp-country traditions of Avoyelles Parish are close by too. Bunkie is the sort of place where one annual festival can pull the town's history, food, families, and farm country into the same few days.
