Burke, SD

Burke has been Gregory County's seat since the railroad-era town was laid out in 1904 and incorporated in 1906. The 2020 census counted 575 residents. The city sits in south-central South Dakota near the Missouri River and Nebraska line, surrounded by farm and ranch country. Gregory County's courthouse and offices give the town a civic role larger than its population, while Burke Public Schools keep elementary through high school education in the center of town.

Burke's public calendar leans into both town and country. The Burke Stampede Rodeo runs each July, drawing people from across the county, and the city park offers a playground, splash pad, basketball, tennis, pickleball, sand volleyball, and camping hookups for the summer season. Burke Lake adds fishing, camping, and a walking trail, while Community Memorial Hospital and local businesses give the county seat everyday services. The result is a compact place with courthouse work during the week and a rodeo-and-lake weekend culture when summer arrives.
