About Burkesville

Burkesville is Cumberland County’s seat on the Cumberland River, a home rule city founded in 1810 and incorporated in 1846. The river shaped the town before highways did: during the steamboat era it carried timber and farm produce, and the county’s early history grew around that crossing and river port. City government today works through a mayor and six council members, while the water department serves city and county customers from the same compact county-seat base.

River heritage still turns up in the calendar. The Cumberland Queen Riverboat Review recalls the old freight route, and the city park hosts bluegrass, softball, fairs, youth sports, and community gatherings. Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park lies nearby, and the Cumberland County school district’s elementary, middle, and high schools are all based in Burkesville. The town also serves as a trail and river access point for the surrounding county. Burkesville’s public services, school system, river events, and lake economy all run through the same small Kentucky seat.
