Burlington, IN

Burlington is a Carroll County town laid out by David Stipp in 1828, when he surveyed 92 lots south from Wildcat Creek. Stipp worked for the federal land office in Crawfordsville and donated land for the town's first schoolhouse. Early businesses followed: a grist mill, general merchandise store, doctor's office, blacksmiths, a sawmill, and a post office. The township took shape as roads, mills, and farms connected the settlement to the rest of Carroll County. Burlington incorporated in 1967 and remains a small town in Burlington Township, with State Roads 29 and 22 meeting at its center.

The Burlington Community Library grew from a volunteer effort launched in 1981 and now sits near the junction of State Roads 29 and 22. The town's park and community buildings add gathering places to the compact street plan, while Carroll County's older agricultural landscape spreads in every direction. Burlington's name honors Wyandot Chief Burlington, giving the town's early Indiana story a connection to the people who lived here before the county was settled by the families and businesses that followed. Today the crossroads still define the place, with the library and roads keeping the original center in view.
