Burns Flat, OK

Burns Flat is a Washita County town whose skyline-sized story starts with a school and ends at a spaceport. The community grew around Burns Flat School, got its post office in 1936, and changed dramatically when the federal government built Clinton-Sherman Naval Air Station during World War II. After the base closed in 1969, the runways became an industrial airpark and eventually a licensed spaceport; in 2026 the property was rebranded Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport. Western Technology Center operates its main campus there, while Burns Flat-Dill City provides local K–12 schools. State Highway 44 puts the town ten miles west of Cordell. Burns Flat is a prairie town with an aviation chapter far bigger than its population.
