Burnt Ranch, CA

Burnt Ranch follows State Route 299 along the Trinity River, about seven miles southeast of Willow Creek in western Trinity County. The river valley has long been home to Chimariko-speaking people, and Burnt Ranch was identified as a principal Chimariko village site. The broader Trinity and Klamath river systems also carry the histories of Nor Rel Muk Wintu, Hoopa Valley, Karuk, and Yurok communities. That Indigenous history gives Burnt Ranch a deeper story than the modern road map alone suggests.

The present community is organized around a school, post office, and the road through the valley. Burnt Ranch Elementary District lists 84 students for the 2025-26 school year, and the school has a much older local history: a one-room school was built here in 1895. The 2020 census counted 250 residents. Hot, dry summers and the Trinity River shape the surrounding landscape, while State Route 299 ties Burnt Ranch to Willow Creek and the rest of western Trinity County. Indigenous history, a long-running school, and mountain-road geography remain visible together.
