Burr Oak, MI

Burr Oak is a St. Joseph County village within Burr Oak Township, surrounded by the level farm country and waterways of southwestern Michigan. The first settlers arrived in 1831, and the village was laid out on William Lock's land in 1851. Its name came from the burr oaks that grew across the area. The post office moved to Burr Oak in 1852, the village incorporated in 1859, and the Michigan Southern and Lake Shore Railroad reached the community in the same early period. The 2020 census counted 753 residents.

Burr Oak grew around stores, a tavern, churches, a blacksmith shop, mills, and the Prairie River. A steam mill appeared in 1853, followed by a grist mill on the river in 1859; the old village history also records a flour mill, sawmill, foundry, and stave factory in the surrounding township. Third Street and the historic center still carry the names of that commercial era, while local groups preserve stories of the opera house, banks, newspaper, schools, and community festivals. Burr Oak's landscape is flat and farmed, but its town center was built around rail, river, and small-town trade.
