About Bush

Located in Williamson County, Bush got its start in the early 1900s as a bustling hub for coal mining and rail transport. The community quickly sprang up around the local mine and rail depot, complete with a company store, a post office, and neighborhood housing. It took its name from railroad executive Benjamin Franklin Bush, officially incorporating in 1905 as families settled in to build a life around the growing rail lines.

Over the years, the village demonstrated plenty of resilience, rebuilding after major events like the historic 1925 Tri-State tornado. Today, Bush is a quiet, tight-knit community that offers plenty of space and rural calm. Residents enjoy a relaxed pace of living while staying within an easy drive of larger neighboring towns like Herrin and Marion for shopping, dining, and outdoor recreation across southern Illinois.
