Bushyhead, OK

Bushyhead is a Rogers County census-designated place along the old St. Louis-San Francisco Railway corridor between Claremore and Vinita. The community took its name from Dennis Wolfe Bushyhead, a Cherokee leader who served as principal chief from 1879 to 1887; the railroad and a post office gave the place its first formal shape. The post office operated from 1898 until 1955. Today Bushyhead is a rural spread of homes and roads whose strongest public story runs through that Cherokee namesake and the Route 66 landscape around northeastern Oklahoma. State mapping places it near Foyil and Chelsea, with the historic highway corridor passing through the surrounding Rogers County countryside. The place is small, but its name opens directly onto Cherokee political history and the region’s railroad-and-highway past.
