Busti, NY

Busti spreads across the southern end of Chautauqua Lake, southwest of Jamestown in western New York. The town was named for Paul Busti, a Holland Land Company official, and locals give the final vowel a long “i” sound—one of those small upstate details that visitors learn quickly. Settlement began around 1811, and Busti was formed in 1823 from parts of Harmony and Ellicott. The lake, the Pennsylvania border, and the roads toward Jamestown all help define its place in the county.

Cottage Park sits near the northwest corner, where Routes 474 and 394 meet, while the shore and nearby parks bring the lake into the town's daily geography. Busti also has several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, giving its rural roads a deeper layer of local memory. The 2020 census counted 7,521 residents. With farms, lake neighborhoods, and older crossroads communities sharing one town, Busti feels more like a collection of connected places than a single compact center.
