Butler, KY

Butler is a Pendleton County home rule-class city whose modern story began with the Kentucky Central Railroad around 1852. The town incorporated on February 1, 1868, and was named for William O. Butler, a former Kentucky representative. The railroad gave the settlement its first organizing line, while the Licking River and the historic covered bridge connected it to the surrounding road network.

Butler's covered bridge was once billed as the world's longest before it was replaced when repairs were no longer practical. The flood of 1997 washed away homes and damaged others, adding a sharper chapter to the river story. Today, the streets run between railroad-era town lots, the river, and routes into the rest of Pendleton County. Butler High School and the Memorial Day parade add familiar civic markers to a place whose history is tied to bridges, trains, and water. The river crossing also gave the town a practical link between Pendleton County farms, its rail-era center, and routes toward Falmouth.
