Cairo, NY

Cairo is the hamlet and census-designated place at the center of the town of Cairo in Greene County, New York. The 2020 census counted 1,368 residents in the CDP. NY 23 runs along the northern side of the hamlet, NY 32 joins it toward the east, and Catskill Creek follows the edge before heading toward the Hudson. The hamlet’s name dates to 1808, when the settlement formerly known as Canton adopted Cairo; the wider town was formed in 1803 from parts of Catskill, Coxsackie, and Durham. That distinction matters here: Cairo the hamlet is the compact center, while Cairo the town stretches across a much larger rural and Catskill landscape.
