Caldwell, OH

Caldwell is Noble County's seat in southeastern Ohio, set along the West Fork of Duck Creek about 23 miles north of Marietta. Joseph and Samuel Caldwell owned the original townsite, and the village took their name when it was founded in 1857. The Pennsylvania Railroad arrived in the 1870s, connecting the courthouse town to markets east and north toward the Great Lakes. That rail link helped make Caldwell more than a seat of government; it gave the village a working connection to the outside world.

The county courthouse, Duck Creek, and the village's school system still organize the local map. Caldwell Exempted Village schools keep education close to the center of town, and the high school's cross-country teams had a remarkable run of Ohio small-school state championships from 1985 through 1992, including a national title in 1986. Marietta is the larger nearby reference point, but Caldwell has its own village-scale identity: courthouse errands, creek-valley streets, old railroad ties, and a school tradition people around Noble County know well.
