Caledonia, MS

Caledonia is a Lowndes County town northeast of Columbus, settled in the early 1820s by migrants from several southern states and incorporated in 1904. The name is generally tied to Caledonia, the Roman name for Scotland, matching the Scots-Irish background many local histories give the first settlers. By 1840 the settlement had a bank, tannery, hat factory, and water mills; churches and a post office followed, and the old community grew around those practical institutions. The local school system remains part of the map, with Caledonia Elementary, Middle, and High School serving the town through the Lowndes County School District. Caledonia today is a small town northeast of Columbus whose story runs from canebrake settlement and water mills to classrooms, local government, and a name borrowed from Scotland.
