Calexico, CA

Calexico gets its name from a blend of California and Mexico, and that connection shapes everyday living here. Located at the southernmost tip of the Imperial Valley, the city shares a close relationship with Mexicali right across the border. Thousands of people walk or drive across daily for work, school, shopping, and family visits. Spanish and English blend together effortlessly throughout town, from neighborhood grocery stores and taquerias to local classrooms and city offices, creating a welcoming, bicultural community.

The city traces its roots back to the early 1900s, when irrigation canals transformed the desert into rich farmland. Agriculture and cross-border logistics remain the economic backbone of the region. Heavy commercial freight moves through the Calexico East crossing, leaving the Calexico West port in the heart of downtown for passenger cars and pedestrians. A major federal overhaul is currently upgrading the downtown port with expanded pedestrian facilities and double the vehicle lanes, which will make routine cross-border travel much smoother.

Local higher education is anchored by San Diego State University's Imperial Valley campus, situated right in town. SDSU allows residents to earn bachelor's and graduate degrees close to home in practical fields like nursing, business, education, and engineering. The campus continues to grow with new academic tracks and dedicated student housing, bringing fresh energy, study groups, and campus activities to the surrounding neighborhood.

Beyond the university, local programs help keep families connected and active. The Camarena Memorial Library serves as a bustling community hub, offering homework help, English conversation practice, computer stations, and creative workshops. During the hot desert summers, residents head over to the Margarita de Necochea Aquatic Center to cool off or enjoy art exhibits and performances at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center. It is a close-knit desert community where strong family ties and local resources create a supportive environment for residents.
