California, Missouri, offers a friendly, small-town atmosphere just about 25 miles west of Jefferson City. As the county seat of Moniteau County, this community of around 4,500 residents has a rich history that is still visible today. Downtown revolves around the classic courthouse square and the restored Finke Theatre, an 1880s venue that hosts concerts, plays, and community events. Summer also brings the Moniteau County Fair, one of the oldest continuously running county fairs in the state.

For families and commuters, California provides a practical and quiet setting to put down roots. The local California R-1 schools are well-supported by the community, and recreation is easy to find between local city parks, the California Sports Complex, and the indoor municipal pool. Getting around is straightforward: local businesses line Missouri Route 87 and the square, while U.S. 50 skirts the edge of town for a quick drive to the state capital or down toward the Lake of the Ozarks.
