Missouri's statehouse also functions as a public museum. The Capitol occupies a limestone bluff on the south bank of the Missouri River, and all four floors are open to the public. Its art includes Thomas Hart Benton's Social History of Missouri murals, while the Missouri State Museum presents the state's natural and cultural history in the building's ground-floor halls and conducts Capitol tours. Nearby Jefferson Landing interprets 19th-century steamboat commerce; it was closed from June through mid-October 2026, while the Capitol and museum stayed open. Together they distinguish Jefferson City as Missouri's capital and the seat of Cole County. The city had 43,228 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 42,489 in July 2025. Lincoln University gives the city another institution with a statewide role and an unusually specific founding history. Soldiers of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry pooled wages to establish Lincoln Institute for emancipated African Americans; it opened in Jefferson City in 1866 and later became a public land-grant university.

Its current campus combines degree programs, research, public services, and a memorial plaza honoring those founders. Outdoors, Jefferson City's greenway provides about 15 miles of multiuse trail linking parks, neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. Binder Park, the city's largest park at 644 acres, has a 155-acre fishing lake, 15 miles of mountain-bike trails, two disc-golf courses, an archery range, camping, and boating access. A pedestrian bridge opened in 2022 between downtown and Deborah Cooper Memorial Park on Adrian's Island, adding greenway and natural-surface paths at the river. The downtown Missouri River Regional Library complements those spaces with 2026 reading programs, yoga, computer classes, clubs, art exhibit space, public technology, and local-history collections.
