Calipatria is a city in Imperial County, California, located about twenty-three miles north of El Centro within the El Centro metropolitan area. Founded in 1914 as Date City, it sits at an elevation of 180 feet below sea level, making it the lowest incorporated city in the Western Hemisphere. The community is located near Slab City, which is famous for Salvation Mountain, a colorful, hand-painted hillside art installation that draws numerous tourists to the area.
