Callery, PA

Callery is a Butler County borough in the valley of Breakneck Creek, southeast of Evans City. The community began in 1880, received a post office in 1884, and incorporated as a borough in 1905. Fire destroyed much of the settlement in 1892, but the rail lines made rebuilding worthwhile. Callery became a junction for the Pittsburgh and Western Railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio system, and the Northern Subdivision, earning the name Callery Junction during its busiest railroad years.

The junction itself faded after a new connection opened near Eidenau, but Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad trains still pass the borough. Main Street and Callery Road keep the village tied to Breakneck Creek and the roads toward Butler County's larger communities. The Callery Volunteer Fire Company remains a visible civic institution, responding from the same compact borough that once organized around rail yards and freight. Callery's map still makes sense as a transportation place: creek valley below, tracks through the center, and roads branching toward Evans City, Mars, and Butler.
