About Camden

Camden is Wilcox County’s seat, founded in 1833 on land Thomas Dunn donated from his plantation holdings. The town was first called Barboursville, then renamed Camden in 1841 for a South Carolina hometown. Dunn’s 1825 Federal-style house is the oldest documented house in town, while the red-brick courthouse completed in 1857 still gives the county-seat center its shape. The Alabama River and nearby Millers Ferry Lock and Dam bring a water-and-power chapter to the older courthouse story. Camden is a south Alabama county seat with a river edge, a brick square, and a name that moved south.
