About Cameron Park
Cameron Park is an unincorporated colonia about four miles north of downtown Brownsville in southern Cameron County. The community began taking shape in the early 1980s on the east side of Farm Road 1847, and its population reached 6,099 in 2020. Brownsville Independent School District serves the area, tying Cameron Park to the larger city even though the neighborhood sits outside the municipal boundary. Water, wastewater, and roads have always been the practical heart of Cameron Park. In the 1990s, infrastructure work brought water and wastewater connections to most homes and paved more of the community’s roads.
Today Brownsville schools and services form the daily orbit, while the neighborhood keeps its own character inside the larger Rio Grande Valley. On paper, Cameron Park is a CDP in Cameron County; on the ground, it is a residential community built out of border-colonia history, family neighborhoods, and the long work of making basic systems function. Local life is organized block by block, with roads and utilities shaping the neighborhood as much as the school boundary.
