Cameron, WI

At the 2020 census, Cameron was a Barron County village of 1,872 people, set among the lakes and farm roads of northwest Wisconsin. Its history starts at Holmen's Crossing, a settlement about a mile and a half south of the present village. The railroad changed the map. Tracks reached Old Cameron in 1882, a station opened that September, and rails continued toward Spooner the following spring. R.A. Burton served as the depot agent, while L.C. Stanley owned and platted the older village site. Those details show why Cameron has a split beginning: the place grew around a rail line, then gathered itself around the station and the newer village center.

Today, Cameron's local identity is tied to that rail-era move and to the everyday institutions that serve a small Barron County community. The village sits within the Cameron School District, with nearby roads leading toward Rice Lake, Chetek, and the Red Cedar country. Old Cameron survives mainly in the story, but it is not a throwaway name; it marks the first attempt at a settlement before the tracks pulled activity north. Cameron feels like a place whose map was decided by transportation, with the old crossing, the railroad grade, and present-day village streets all part of the same history.
