Camp Point, IL

Camp Point began in 1835 as Garrett's Mills, the settlement founded by Peter Garrett around a mill; a schoolhouse followed in 1836. The village was later chartered under the name Indian Camp Point, and U.S. Route 24 now runs through its Adams County setting about 25 miles east of Quincy. That combination of early milling, a school almost from the start, and a highway connection to the regional center gives Camp Point its role as a service village for the surrounding area.

The village's current map includes Community District No. 3, a library built in 1974, Bailey Park and two other parks, an 18-hole golf course, volunteer fire and ambulance services, and more than 75 businesses listed by the village. Those institutions give residents several regular stops within the village while Quincy supplies the larger regional orbit. The 2020 census counted 1,121 people. Camp Point keeps its early mill-and-school story in the name, then carries it forward through schools, municipal services, recreation, and the businesses strung along Route 24.
