Camp Wood, TX

Camp Wood is a city in Real County, Texas, on the Nueces River at Farm Road 337 and State Highway 55, just below Camp Wood Creek near the river's headwaters. The 2020 census counted 517 people. It sits in the Nueces Canyon on the Balcones Escarpment at the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau. The town took its name from a Civil War camp directed by Colonel Wood, then grew in 1920 around workers for the Uvalde Cedar Company. Archaeological evidence shows people used the site for millennia before the modern town.

Camp Wood remains the service center for Nueces Canyon. Nueces Canyon Consolidated Independent School District's elementary campus is downtown, and the city provides water and sewer; the central map also includes a library, bank, post office, grocery, restaurants, and shops. In 1976, the city renamed a park and a street for Lindbergh and Klink, and a state historical marker commemorated the event. Nearby ranch roads and the river keep the surrounding landscape close to town. The local scoop is a Hill Country river city where a military name, cedar work, old archaeology, and a practical downtown all meet.
