About Canadian

Canadian is Hemphill County's seat in the eastern Texas Panhandle, on the south side of the Canadian River near the mouth of Red Deer Creek. The 2020 census counted 2,339 residents. The town took shape in 1887 when the Southern Kansas Railway crossed the river: a tent settlement became a permanent town, the county seat, and eventually a railroad shipping center. The name comes from the river, not the country to the north. That river valley gives Canadian a more layered setting than the phrase High Plains might suggest.

U.S. 60 and 83 run through town as Second Street, while the river, creek, plateaus, ranches, and oil-and-gas country spread beyond the grid. Rodeo has been part of Canadian's character since a commercial show at the 1888 Cowboys' Reunion, and the town still leans into its western calendar and river trails. Canadian's local scoop is a Texas Panhandle county seat that began as a bridge-and-railroad town beside a river, then kept its ranching, rodeo, and shipping personality.
