About Canby
Canby is a Yellow Medicine County city on Canby Creek, a tributary of the Lac qui Parle River, with a downtown that was rebuilt in brick and stone after an 1893 fire. The city began with John Swenson's homestead store, then grew quickly after Canby Station opened on the Winona and St. Peter Railroad in 1876. That rail-era core is now a National Historic District, and the city still carries a strong farm-country identity. Canby High School also has a serious wrestling record, with state team championships across several decades. Canby is a prairie town where a creek, a rebuilt main street, and a school mat all tell different parts of the same story.
