Candy Kitchen, NM

Tucked into the rugged high desert of western New Mexico, Candy Kitchen is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path community with around a hundred residents and a colorful backstory. It got its quirky name during Prohibition, when a local moonshiner made fudge as an excuse to order bulk sugar without arousing suspicion. Today, the area draws people looking for quiet, off-grid living and plenty of open space. It is also famous for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, a rescue center that adds to the remote settlement's unique, independent spirit.
