About Cannonsburg

Cannonsburg sits in Boyd County's East Fork Little Sandy River valley, about seven miles west of Catlettsburg and eight miles southwest of Ashland. The river is the town's natural line, with a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife access point south of the community and Route 180 carrying traffic through the hills. Cannonsburg Elementary and Boyd County High School give the place a clear school-centered core, while the county's Cannonsburg offices, fire district, and water district keep the name on the local service map. The post office closed in 1929, but the community never disappeared. Cannonsburg is northeastern Kentucky river-valley country, close to Ashland but still its own place.
