About Carbon Hill
Carbon Hill is a small Grundy County village in the coal-country cluster around Coal City, Diamond, and Goose Lake. The 2020 census counted 372 residents. The village's name points straight to the area's older economy: coal mines opened across the surrounding communities, and miners' settlements grew close enough to the pits for people to walk to work. Carbon Hill now sits inside the larger road and school network of eastern Grundy County.
Coal City Community Unit School District 1 serves Carbon Hill from early childhood through high school. The district covers 55 square miles and includes attendance centers in Coal City, so school buses carry the village into a shared community. The coal industry shaped the first map, but the current one is more connected: Carbon Hill homes, Coal City schools, Grundy County roads, and the remaining traces of mining sit together in the same landscape. It is a small village with a name that still tells you what brought the first workers here.
