Carbondale, KS

Carbondale is an Osage County city on U.S. 75 south of Topeka. The 2020 census counted 1,352 residents. Santa Fe Trail USD 434 serves Carbondale, Scranton, and Overbrook, so school events connect the three communities. Highway access puts Topeka within the practical orbit for larger shopping, medical care, and jobs, while Carbondale keeps its own city government, neighborhoods, and local routines. The surrounding landscape is a mix of small-town streets and the farm country that runs south from the capital.

The city took shape in 1869 when the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad reached the area and a spur ran toward the coal fields. Carbondale incorporated in 1872, and the Santa Fe Trail’s older route adds another layer to the local map; Kansas DAR later marked the trail with roadside markers. Coal is no longer the town’s main story, but the railroad, trail, and school district still frame the town’s shape and routines. The name Santa Fe Trail carries that history into the present school day.
