Carlsborg, WA

Carlsborg is an unincorporated Clallam County community and census-designated place east of Port Angeles. The 2020 census counted 1,100 residents. U.S. 101 runs through the southern edge, with Sequim about three miles east and Port Angeles about 13 miles west. The road is the practical center of the place: Carlsborg has long been known for having three gas stations at the only traffic light on this stretch of Highway 101 between the two cities. That sounds like a roadside detail, but it is also a good read on how the community works. Carlsborg began around the sawmill associated with Erikson, and the name came from his Swedish hometown.

The sawmill stopped operating in 1968, but the corridor kept its role as a place for services, work, homes, and through traffic. Today the county's Carlsborg Urban Growth Area gives the community a planning identity without turning it into a separate incorporated town. County services, small businesses, industrial parcels, homes, and the 101 corridor fill in the rest. You are basically in the Sequim-Port Angeles hinge: close enough to both for work and errands, but with its own roadside, sawmill-to-service character.
