Carlton, MN

Carlton has served as Carlton County's seat since 1871, and its location makes that role easy to picture: the city sits just west of Jay Cooke State Park, near the lower Saint Louis River and the junction of Highways 45 and 210. The railroad brought the first big shift. In 1870, the Northern Pacific line linked Duluth and St. Paul, and temporary workers' shacks at the work site gave the place its earlier name, Northern Pacific Junction.

Today the county courthouse and other county offices share the map with Jay Cooke's river gorge, trails, and swinging bridge. The Willard Munger State Trail connects with the park at its north edge, giving Carlton a recreation corridor that follows the same transportation geography that shaped the town's early growth. Carlton Daze, usually held in late July, adds a recurring community date to that civic setting. Carlton works as both a county seat and a park-edge town for the Saint Louis River landscape.
