Carnelian Bay, CA

Carnelian Bay is an unincorporated community on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Placer County. The post office history is a little more layered than the name suggests: Cornelian Bay had short-lived offices in the 1880s and early 1890s, while the Carnelian Bay post office opened in 1908. The community sits along the North Lake Tahoe road between Tahoe City and Kings Beach, with the shoreline doing most of the orienting.

The place grew out of the lake’s settlement and resort era. The Whitney survey party named Carnelian Bay in 1860, and by the late nineteenth century the bay had a hotel and other lakefront establishments. Today Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District serves the area, while a Carnelian Bay lake-access project is restoring shoreline access and natural processes. The name can be spelled two ways in older records, but the local picture is consistent: a small Tahoe community where highway, lake access, old resort history, and the larger basin’s seasonal rhythm all meet. Carnelian Bay is part of the North Tahoe string of places, with Kings Beach nearby and the lake always in view.
