Carolina, RI

Carolina is a Washington County village and CDP of 924 residents in the 2020 census, split between Charlestown and Richmond on the Pawcatuck River. Route 112 runs through the village, crossing the river and threading a narrow corridor of homes, the old mill site, reservoir, and bridges. Carolina began as Nichols Bridge, where a wooden dam and gristmill went up in 1802; Oliver Hazard established Carolina Mill on that site in 1842 and named the mill and village for his wife Caroline. The factory stood in Richmond, while some worker housing crossed into Charlestown.

Carolina still reads as a corridor rather than a standalone town center. The historic district stretches about four-fifths of a mile along Route 112, with residential ground rising on both sides of the river valley. The Richmond Historical Society keeps the Bell School and former Richmond Town Clerk’s Office in the village, preserving the two-town boundary as part of the everyday map. The local scoop is a Rhode Island mill village whose streets, schoolhouse, river, and old industrial site never quite fit inside one town line.
