Carpendale, WV

Carpendale is a Mineral County town made from three subdivisions—Carpenters Addition, Millerdale I, and Millerdale II—so the name is a civic merger more than an old county-seat story. It incorporated through the Circuit Court on January 2, 1990. The town sits across the North Branch Potomac River from Cumberland, Maryland; Miller Road is the main way in and out, with the larger US 220 and Route 28 network across the river. That boundary gives Carpendale a very specific orientation: eastern West Virginia on the edge of a Maryland industrial city.

No major highway serves Carpendale directly, and the town's map is organized around homes, the single access road, and local water and sewer operations. The town council meets on the first Tuesday of each month, a small but useful detail because Carpendale's identity comes from maintaining a residential place rather than building a separate retail center. It belongs to the Cumberland metropolitan area, but the local shorthand is simpler: three subdivisions, one road, a river border, and a town government that took shape in 1990.
