Carrier Mills, IL

Carrier Mills is a Saline County village of 1,672 residents in the 2020 census, seven miles southwest of Harrisburg. Its earlier names include Carrier's Mills, Morrillsville, and Catskin. George Washington Carrier helped establish the town with a steam-powered sawmill and grist mill, and the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad turned the settlement into a regional boomtown. Lumber gave way to coal, and decades of mining shaped the village's streets and working history. The railroad and mine history remain easy to see.

Harrisburg now supplies the larger area's employment, shopping, and entertainment, while Carrier Mills keeps its own local traditions. The annual Catskin Days Fair and Parade uses the old nickname to celebrate the village's history. Two miles south, the Carrier Mills Archaeological District preserves evidence of long human occupation along the Saline River, including sites from several prehistoric periods. The village therefore holds several time layers in a small area: mill town, coal community, railroad stop, archaeological landscape, and a present-day place connected to Harrisburg.
